It’s been more than a year since the most devastating global health crisis of the 21st century began and today we are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. To celebrate this triumph, National Nurses Week was expanded into a month-long celebration to tribute the people who help care for millions of people every day. Throughout the entire month of May, nurses are being recognized for their contributions and the impact they make engaging in the community, inspiring and educating others and making a difference in the health and wellness of others.
Nurses are perhaps the most valuable and essential component of healthcare. For nearly two millennia, the public has entrusted their well-being in the hands of nurses who serve on the frontline of medical care. Nurses now have greater responsibility and autonomy than ever before, allowing them to pave the pathway toward a better future.
Roles nurses fulfill
Nurses play a critical role in the operational, relational and educational aspects of the healthcare industry. With extensive knowledge in a variety of specialized areas, they are equipped with the tools to continue reaching beyond satisfactory care. From acclimating to new technology to adapting in trying times, nurses emit resiliency and dedication to their profession.
Expertise and advocacy
Innovation in the healthcare industry is derived from the combination of academic knowledge, expertise and interactions between patients and staff. Who embodies all those things without missing a beat? Nurses! Although many healthcare practitioners specialize in certain areas of study, their knowledge of the subject matter often supersedes their ability to carry out patient interactions. Fortunately, nurses spend an excessive amount of time with patients, delivering hourly care to monitor and maintain the patient’s physical, mental and emotional stability.
Nursing care is essential to patient morale because it creates a relational dynamic that fosters trust, gratitude and sympathy, facilitating a positive environment for recovery to take place. Nurses serve as advocates for their patients, communicating their observations to doctors so they can better deliver care that is tailored to an individual’s needs, behavior, habits, desires and concerns. For instance, nurses can gauge a patient’s health status by communicating with them and gathering bits of information that may assist in the delivery of medical care.
Educating patients and families
In addition to patient advocacy, nurses utilize educational techniques to translate medical terminology into simple understood explanations, giving patients and their families a greater chance of understanding and retaining information and following instructions for care and recovery. To help ensure improved patient health, nurses devote ample time and energy educating patients. That can include explaining treatments and procedures, instructions for medications and side effects, proper nutrition and hygiene recommendations, or how a clinic operates for ongoing treatment. Likewise, nurses also frequently instruct other medical practitioners, such as caretakers, on the proper treatment for overseeing an ill or injured individual.
Education doesn’t only exist within the walls of a doctor’s office, clinic or hospital —it’s disseminated to the public through communal outreach and intervention. Nurses help promote wellness strategies, good habits, and preventative health measures through various communications, which helps individuals and communities stay informed and protected.
Improving patient outcomes
Complex medical conditions that were once incurable are now treatable. As the landscape of modern healthcare continues to transform, nurses are expected to adapt. New technology and advances in medical research are making a significant difference in patient outcomes. With nurses serving on the frontlines of patient care, they play an integral and instrumental role in rolling out and delivering new care and treatments. As nurses build relationships with patients, they also help build trust, which can improve how healthcare is approached and executed. Above all else, nurses represent compassionate care. They spend their careers supporting, listening and helping others.
While nurses should be honored and celebrated every day, National Nurses Month provides an opportunity for the community to show support for the individuals that support all of us. At Adobe Care and Wellness, we are grateful to work with an incredible group of nurses that are helping improve the outcomes of the people we serve. Thanks to the incredible work they do, we are able to make a positive impact on the lives we touch.
