Second only to skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States and accounts for about 30% (or 1 in 3) of all new cancers each year. Regular mammograms, or low-dose x-rays of the breast, can help to identify breast cancer early, when treatment is most likely to be successful and, in many cases, years before physical symptoms develop. Research has shown that women who have regular mammograms are more likely to have breast cancer found earlier, less likely to require aggressive treatments and more likely to be cured.
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The American Cancer Society recommends that women at average risk for breast cancer, meaning no personal history of breast cancer, strong family history of breast cancer, or a genetic mutation known to increase risk of breast cancer (such as the BRCA gene) be screened at the following ages…
- Women between 40 and 44 have the option to start screening with a mammogram every year.
- Women 45 to 54 should receive mammograms every year.
- Women 55 and older may choose to be screened every other year, or to continue yearly mammograms. Screening should continue if a woman is in good health and expected to live at least 10 more years.
